The Muslim Youth Council, in partnership with the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos and the Turkish-Filipino Friendship and Solidarity Association, initiated a hijab awareness event in celebration of World Hijab Day 2023 with the theme “Progress, not oppression.”

Present were the MYC council officers, NCMF’s Gender and Development Division and its staff, TUFIFSA stakeholders, and the participants, which were non-muslim women from Xavier University, Cagayan de Oro College, Liceo de Cagayan University, Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School, and different parts of the city to participate in the event.

The event included lectures on the wisdom of wearing hijab, the rationale behind the National Celebration of Hijab Law, and the giving of hijabs to the non-muslim women participants. The event also highlighted the importance of having cultural awareness within and among the Muslim and non-Muslim communities of the city.

This goes without saying that the event served its purpose of creating hijab awareness and establishing an even stronger relationship and cultural appreciation with the non-muslim women participants. ALHAMDULILLAH!

Upon the return of Abdullah Nuno, son of Panglima Taupan, he established the masjid at Taaluk Sangay now Taluksangay an islet near Zamboanga City, with a small community of Sama Bangingi.

Then a child of ten, Abdullah Nuno was one of the hundreds of Sama Bangingi together with his mother and grandmother, resettled by the Spaniards under General Claveria during the period 1848-1858. After completing college education Abdullah Nuno requested permission to return home. They were brought to Bohe Lebbong but eventually settled in Taluksangay, an islet that practically was hidden from big storms.
Hadji Maas Abdullah Nuno established the Taluksangay mosque, and in 1911, requested the Ottoman Sultan through American Governor Finley to send a learned Turkish to provide in-depth Islamic education to Taluksangay. Maas Nuno spoke Spanish, English, Bahasa Sug and Sinama.

The National Historical Commission placed this marker in recognition of Maas Hadji Abdullah Nuno, the respected old man’s vision to establish the first mosque in the Zamboanga Peninsula. Together with his nephew Hadji Abdullah Nuno, (father of the highly esteemed Hadji Jainuddin Nuno),they made Taluksangay a peaceful Muslim community.
